I've recently looked at my phone bill even more closely than I usually do. Actually I am, as far as administration, quite a Chaotic and bills are paid almost uncontrollably. This time, however, jumped me something in the eye, which most suits the subject of manipulation. With my account I was given the following, sent a short letter.

I quote:
STRESS-FREE PAY
via debit or credit card

For you the easiest and fastest way:

• Save time

• saves you the Remember the payment date

• you can revoke the authorization at any time

• you the payment and change online

course, you will receive a monthly Service statement of the charges we deduct from your account as requested.

Or sign up for electronic billing service and receive 100 bonus points for this one-time gift.

Please send the completed form to: .........

OK. Now what is manipulative in these lines? Is it normal that you get sent such letters. Right?

right. Which again only shows how much we have grown accustomed to being manipulated. The one or the other may well jump on this kind of manipulation, not more and not read the note to throw in the trash, but some people will read the lines but quite unconsciously and respond exactly as the authors provide it.

To clarify, I dissect the whole thing and point to some techniques.

The writing is on the familiar letterhead, with the familiar logo and also wrote the familiar colors. This creates the ever necessary Rapport .

STRESS-FREE PAY . The headline, written in capital letters, talks immediately, the need of every person to freedom and linked to stress at the same time very skillful, the rather negative act of paying (money out of your hands), with a positive feeling.

Furthermore, I am approached directly (for you ...), what the Rapport deepened same time, aiming to give the impression that this offer is only me. "My needs are important, I am important!"

My need for easier and faster, and thus stress-free execution has to guess, in today's fast not hard.

( you may revoke the authorization at any time ) In the next sentence is the presupposition that I, perhaps, fear problems with a possible revocation. This fear is thus equal leveled before and to me once again to show how is everything, you're assigning me to the possibility of execution on the internet (I do not get out of the house).

And then we had there the following interesting formulation: course, you will receive a monthly statement of the service charges that we deduct from your account as requested. Here again a hidden presupposition. Namely, fear that I would get no service billing.
